NGC Expert Comments:
The 3 cent nickel is one of those curious denominations that tells a uniquely American story. Created to pay for postage, then rendered obsolete by the evolving logic of the decimal system, its brief life left behind a trail of beautiful proofs—now transformed into a dazzling showcase by collector TD Petersen. Twenty of the 26 coins in his set are Top Pop, but numbers alone don’t tell the full story. From the incredible PF67★ Ultra Cameo 1865, the first year of issue, to the proof-only 1877 in an astonishing PF68★ Cameo, this is a set packed with rarity and aesthetic appeal. Every coin sparkles with superb surfaces. Despite being essentially unimprovable, Petersen somehow continues to refine and elevate this set. For connoisseurs of classic proofs and collectors of the unusual, this is a masterpiece worth studying.
